Royal Small Arms Factory Enfield, Model: Mk. III Snider cavalry carbine, Cal: .577 Snider, MFG: 1870, S/N: 6547, Single shot rifle, 19 '' barrel.
HISTORY: The snider breech loading system, designed by Jacob Snider, was adopted by the British army in 1866 as a conversion system for the P1853 Enfield muzzleloading rifle. It was used by the British until the early 1880's, after when Martini-Henry production was sufficient. The British Indian Army would use Snider rifles until the end of the nineteenth century. All models before the MK.III converted old muzzleloaders, the MK.III had new production steel barrels (early production still used iron), new actions & stocks. These carbines can be found with sling bars, sling rings, or have no sling attachment at all, like the rifle here. These were designed to be carried in saddle scabbards.
CONDITION: The straight wrist wood stock is very good with small nicks, dings, & scratches from use/age. The stock has two cracks, one to the rear of where the lock plate is mated to the stock, & another on the right side of the forend cap. The right cheek of stock is stamped with a roundel cartouche that reads ''R'' crown ''M'' ''ENFIELD'' around & a arrow over ''WD'' in the middle. The metal has mostly toned to a chocolate brown patina with a few areas of thinned blue remaining. Left side of the receiver is stamped with a line of proof marks. The top is marked ''III''. The top of the breech block is marked with two proofs. The bottom of the breech block is marked with the S/N & another proof. The left side of the barrel is marked ''STEEL'' & many British proofs. The right side is marked with one proof. Other parts stamped with a multitude of British proofs. The bore is poor. Has roughness & light pitting, the chamber has heavy rust & pitting. Five groove rifling. The barrel holds a blade front sight with a stepped base/ladder, V-notch rear sight marked 1 to 3 on the base & 4 to 6 on the ladder. The stock carries a brass trapdoor buttplate, nothing inside. Rifle has no sling attachment. Antique, no FFL Req - Value: 600 to 1000
