Pouderon A St Etienne, Model: Zulu shotgun conversion from French 1867 Tabatieve rifle., 12 Ga. MFG: Muzzleloader 1840s-50s, breechloader conversion 1860s-70s, shotgun conversion 1880s-90s., S/N: none, single shot shotgun, 34 barrel.
HISTORY: This gun started life as a French Muzzleloader, either a Mle 1842 or Mle 1853/57. Then it was upgraded with the Tabariere breech loading system. invented in 1864, roughly 358,000 rifles had been converted by July of 1870, in time for the Franco-Prussian war where they were used by second line troops or in defensive roles since this weapon system was recognized as ballistically inferior to the Chassepot rifle. After the war they were sold to Belgium who converted them into very cheap shotguns, known today as ZULU guns. Large numbers of these were bought by Bannerman & marked with the trade names ''ZULU'', or ''HUNTER'' on the topo of the barrel & sold in the US. They were very cheap, usually costing 3-5 dollars. To compare pump-action shotguns were being sold at Sears around that time for 15-20 dollars.
CONDITION: the straight wrist wood stock is fair to poor. Has multiple big cracks in the forend. has a wood plug in the old ramrod channel. Stock has nicks, dings, stains, & scratches. The metal is a mix of brown patina/rust & a old worn black finish. The left side of the barrel is marked with worn Belgium proofs. The top of the barrel is marked ''ZULU''. The lock plate is marked ''POUDERON A ST ETIENNE''. the firing pin is rusted solid in the forward position, not allowing the breech to open all the way. Hammer periodically does not lock back when pulled back. The bore is poor, has roughness & pitting. The barrel holds a bead front sight, bead sight is not retained & falls out. Stock carries a steel buttplate, has rust. Antique, no FFL Req - Value: 80 to 160
