It is believed by collectors that these are Bechuanaland Protectorate Guns. It was a was a protectorate established on 31 March 1885 in Southern Africa by the United Kingdom. with the intention to protect the huge landlocked region in Southern Africa against further expansion by Germany, Portugal or the Boers. While Britain was generally responsible for the administration of the territory, the Tswana people were granted self-government.
CONDITION: The straight wrist wood stock is very good with a few small nicks, dings, & scratches. The buttstock appears to have a old light sand & re-finish job done to it. Its toned a different color than forend & the metal is proud to the wood around the wrist & buttplate; but the wood still shows aged patina. Small chip repair on the left side of forend, next to the forend cap. The right side of the forend, just ahead of the receiver is marked with a small backwards ''R'' & normal ''R'' cartouche, & a very worn crown marking that appears to read, crown over ''BF'' over ''80''. The bottom of forend, just ahead of the receiver has worn markings that read ''48'', ''3'', ''2'', ''51'', the ''2'' stamp is in the font normally found on British military rifles of the era. The metal has toned to a chocolate brown patina with areas of roughness. The right side of the receiver is marked ''BPB 1671''. The top of the receiver is marked with a small British proof. The left side of the barrel is marked with three British commercial proofs & ''52''. The bore is fair. It has roughness & pitting. The barrel holds a barleycorn front sight, & a stepped base/ladder, V-notch rear sight. The base is marked 100 to 300, & the ladder is marked 4 to 10. The stock carries a steel buttplate, mix of brown patina & gun metal gray. Rifle has both sling loops & cleaning/clearing rod. Antique, no FFL Req - Value: 800 to 1200
