RARE!! Westley Richards & Co., Model: Type 2 Z.A.R. Martini-Henry Carbine, Improved Francotte breech, Transvaal Police Dept., Cal: .577/.450 Martini-Henry, MFG: 1897, S/N: 4752, Lever action single rifle, 25'' barrel.
HISTORY: When the British took the South African Capital, Pretoria, in June of 1900, they would set up the Transvaal Police Department (TPD), they soon became better known as the South African Constabulary. They were armed with a variety of weapons, captured arms & one given to them by the British. The British also supplied them with bobby uniforms. The ZAR only ordered 2000 Westly Richards carbines with the actual amount reaching them unknow. This carbine is one that survived the second Boer war & went on to be used by the TPD. A rare & interesting find.
CONDITION: The two piece, straight wrist wood stock is good. Has nicks, dings, chips & wear from use/age, stock has darkened in areas from oils. stock has worn/shrunk leaving the metal proud to the wood around the receiver & buttplate. The right cheek of the stock is marked ''T.P.D.'', ''13'', making is heavily worn but still present. The metal has mostly toned to a brown patina with scratches & spots of roughness. The left side of the receiver is marked with a triangle over ''WESTLEY RICHARDS & CO.''. The right side is marked ''MADE SPECIALLY FOR'', ''Z.A.R.'', ''S''. The S/N is marked on the bottom right edge of receiver. the left side of the barrel is marked with three proofs & a small ''52''. The top of the chamber is marked ''1897'' in a triangle. The top of the barrel is marked ''WESTLEY RICHARDS&CO''. The bore is good. Its bright with roughness & spots of light pitting. The barrel holds a barleycorn front sight, & a stepped base/ladder, V-notch rear sight. The base is marked 100 to 300, & the ladder is marked 4 to 10. The stock carries a steel buttplate, mix of brown patina & gun metal gray. Rifle has both sling loops & cleaning/clearing rod. Antique, no FFL Req - Value: 800 to 1600
