Westley Richards & Co., Model: ZAR Martini-Henry with improved Francotte breech, Cal: .577x450 Martini-Henry, MFG: 1898, S/N: 26411, Lever action single shot, 33 '' barrel.
HISTORY: These rifles were made right before the Second Anglo Boer war specifically for the ZAR, even marked as such, (ZAR stand for 'The South African Republic' or in Dutch ''Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek''). They featured the improved Francotte patent breech mechanism. This enabled the complete action to be removed from the receiver by unscrewing the large screw at the bottom of the receiver. It was common for the Boers to cut down stocks on their rifles. This was likely done to simulate the more expensive sporting rifles which were known as ''Kaal-Lope'' or bare barrels. & it semi-free floated the barrels making them more accurate.
CONDITION: The two-piece wood stock is good. It has small nicks, dings, chips, & scratches from use/wear. The buttstock has shrunk over time & the metal is proud to wood where the wrist meets the receiver & around the buttplate. The forend has been cut down, common to find on Boer used guns. The metal has mostly toned to a dark brown patina with spots of roughness. The left side of the receiver is marked with a triangle over ''WESTLEY RICHARDS & CO.''. right side of receiver is marked ''MADE SPECIALLY FOR'', ''ZAR''. S/N is marked on the bottom right edge of receiver. The left side of the receiver is marked with three small British proofs & ''52''. Above the chamber is marked ''1898'' in triangle. The top of the barrel, behind the rear sight is marked ''WESTLEY RICHARDS & CO'', Infront of the rear sight is marked ''HENRY RIFLING''. The bore is fair to poor. Its bright with roughness, pitting, & a dark ring about 1/3rd down the muzzle end. The barrel holds a barleycorn front sight with white paint added, & a stepped base/ladder, V-notch rear sight. The base is marked 1 to 4, & the ladder is marked 5 to 12. The stock carries a steel buttplate, toned brown. Rifle has no sling loops. Antique no FFL Req. - Value: 500 to 1000
