Description

OE.W.G. Steyr, Model: 1883 Peabody-Martini henry ZAR contract, Cal: .577x450 Martini-Henry, MFG: 1883, S/N: H4030, Lever action single shot rifle, 33 1/8'' barrel.

HISTORY: this is a commercial version of the M1879 Peabody-Martini henrys Steyr was making for Romania. The Peabody action was designed by Henry Oliver Peabody, an American gun designer. He would patent his action in July 1862. A few of his rifles were entered in a US military trial in 1864 with favorable reports but was never adopted. The Peabody rifle was fairly popular in its time with a multitude of nations buying them. The Swiss gunsmith Friedrich von Martini would take Peabodys work & improve it with hammerless internal striker & used a toggle moved by the striker to lock the action during firing. This action Mated to a barrel with rifling designed by Alexander Henry, made the ubiquitous British Martini-Henry M1871. After the Boers won the first Anglo-Boer war, the new independent South African Republic (ZAR) needed more arms for defense and the possibility of the British deciding to reclaim the territory. Already familiar with the British Martini-Henry, they went to Steyr, who supplied them with the commercial version of the Romanian rifles in 1883. They would have these rifles made in the .577/450 Martini Henry cartridge. These were marked ''Z.A.R.'' & with a new ZAR S/N on the receiver. Steyr made rifles to a higher quality than the British Martini counterparts & today are known to be excellent shooting rifles.

CONDITION: The two piece, straight wrist wood stock is very good with nicks, dings, scratches & wear from use/age. Left cheek of stock, by the buttplate is stamped ''R202''. Forend does have slight play back & forth. The metal has toned to a mix of gun metal gray & brown patina. The left side of the receiver is marked with a large ''OE'' ''W'' logo with a banner inside; inside the banner is marked ''STEYR * 1883''. ''Z.A.R.'', ''4601'' is marked just to the right of those markings. The right side of the receiver is marked with the S/N & a crossed flag proof mark. Other small parts are marked with a small ''OE.W.G.'' stamp. The bore is good. Its bright with roughness & spots of light pitting. Seven groove rifling. The barrel holds a barleycorn front sight with a stepped base/ladder rear sight. Right side of base marked 100 to 400, ladder is marked 5 to 12, with a 14 notch at the top.
