Ross Rifle Co., Model: MK II 3 star Ross Rifle, US marked training rifle., Cal: .303 British, MFG: 1909, S/N: 19432, Bolt action straight pull rifle, 28'' barrel.
HISTORY: The Ross rifle has a long & very interesting story. this rifle is just a small part of that. In 1917 the US was sending troops to the front lines to fight. They wanted everyone sent overseas to be armed with the same gun, or at the very least the same caliber. But the US was having problems scaling up its M1903 production for its growing army; so, stop gaps had to be made until it could catch up or another solution could be found. The US would use older obsolete rifles for home guard troops, or for training, where keeping them repaired & supplied with ammo was much easier than on the other side of the world. Leaving more of the standard arms for front line use. 20,000 ross Rifle MK.II 3 stars were bought for training rifles. They were marked with a Flaming bomb & US on the bottom of the wrist.
CONDITION: The semi-pistol grip wood walnut stock is very good with small nicks, dings, scuffs & scratches from use/wear. The bottom of the wrist is marked ''US'' & the S/N. the right cheek of stock is line out regiment & unit markings, as well as a Roundel cartouche marked with a crown at the top, ''D'' arrow ''C'' in the middle, & ''QUEBEC'' on the bottom. To the right of the Roundel is ''3*'' over ''II.'', ''842/1909'', ''RD''. The metal has mostly toned to a brown patina, with spots of gray, & thinned finish on the barrel. The left side of the receiver is marked ''ROSS RIFLE CO QUEBEC.CANADA.1905.'', ''PATENTED''. The bore is very good. Its bright with spots of light roughness. The barrel holds a hooded, square post front sight with a V-notch/aperture, flip up ladder rear sight. The stock carries a steel trapdoor buttplate. Has worn gray with spots of patina. Nothing inside trapdoor. Rifle has three sling swivels with a stacking loop. Comes with a Ross bayonet 1907 patent date, with sheath & frog. Bayonet grips have a bunch of crossed out numbers, with numerus other markings on the guard & pommel. FFL or C&R Req - Value: 1000 to 2000
