Description

Birmingham Small Arms & Metal Co., Model: Lee-Metford Mk II (AKA Long-Lee, Long-Tom), Cal: .303 British, MFG: 1895, S/N: 6619, bolt action rifle, 30 1/4'' barrel.

HISTORY: This is one of the first rifles in the British Lee series of rifles. Known as long-lees, or long toms because of their longer barrel compared to the later SMLE. They saw considerable service in the Boer war with the British & were used in WW1 as well in large numbers with the massive need for arms. This rifle still has its early volley sights which is hard to find today. Many of these MK 2 rifles were converted to MK2* rifles with adding a safety to the rear of the bolt, this rifle is one of the few that did not get that upgrade. The NSW markings stand for New South Wales of Australia. Based on the markings this rifle was used for the British for some time, likely saw use in the Boer war, & then in 1906 was sent to Australia. Used by them for a while, was even marked as drill purpose only rifle. Its stayed in Australia before the cosigner bought it back in the early 2000s.

CONDITION: The semi-pistol grip wood stock is very good. The buttstock has been professionally cleaned up, with all markings looking untouched, and does not appear to of been sanded. The forend of the stock has a bunch of dark stains. Thew whole stock a various small nicks, dings, & dents from use/age. The right cheek of the stock is marked ''N.S.W.'', ''6/02'', lined out ''6619'', & ''95'', BSA WD roundel over ''II'', over ''I'', ''6619'', NSW roundel cartouche marked ''COMMONWEALTH AUSTRALIA MILLY FORCES'' around ''NSW''. The stock just ahead of the magazine is marked with a worn ''DP'' stamp. The blued metal finish rates 60% on the receiver with wear, scratches, & parts toning brown, the dust cover & a few spots of the receiver has rust speckling. The blued finish on the barrel rates 80% with spots of wear & rust speckling. The right side of the wrist band is marked with a crown over ''VR.'', ''B.S.A.&M.Co.'', ''1895.'', ''II.''. The left side of the receiver band is marked with a worn cross sword proof. The right side is marked with the S/N & a small proof, the S/N is partially obliterated with scratches/cuts, still partially visible. The top of the barrel is marked with a barely visible stacked rifles over ''B.S.A.'' logo. A bunch of small parts marked with small proofs like the mag, barrel bands, etc. S/N matching bolt. The bore is good. Its bright with consistent light roughness throughout & thinned rifling. Correct 7 groove Metford rifling. The barrel holds a small square blade front sight with a flip up ladder, V-notch rear sight marked 6 to 17. Rifle also still has its early flip up volley sights on the left side of the gun. The stock carries a brass trapdoor buttplate, bras has spots of patina. Nothing inside trapdoor. Rifle has both sling loops & third stacking swivel. Has a cleaning rod. Rifle comes with correct P1888 bayonet, MK I 2nd type, Sanderson MFG, base of blade marked with many proofs & late 1890s dates. A nice example of a typical Boer long-lee that saw use with British & Australian forces. ANTIQUE No FFL Req - Value: 800 to 1600
