RSAF Enfield, Model No.1 Mk.III SHTLE (SMLE), Cal: .303 British, MFG: 1918, S/N: S5653, bolt action rifle, 25 1/8'' barrel.
HISTORY: Upon gaining independence from Britain in 1921, the new government of the Republic of Ireland formed a new national army. Britian supplied the weapons of this force. With the standard service rifle for Britain at the time was the SMLE, they received a bunch of them. The rifle would be marked with a ''FF'' in a circle on the top of the receiver standing for Fianna Fail (Soldiers of Destiny), the Republican government that was in control at the time. Ireland would buy rifles from Britian through the 1920s & 30s all marked with the ''FF'' stamp.
CONDITION: The two piece, semi-pistol grip wood stock is very good with nicks, dings, dents, scratches & wear from use/age. The bottom of the wrist is marked with a faint ''9''. Unmarked brass unit disc embedded into right cheek of buttstock. The left cheek is marked with a square cartouche/indent, no markings inside. The buttstock & forend wood do not match in color, the forend is likely replaced wood from a military refurbishment. The metal has been buffed & refinished at a arsenal & some point. The blued metal finish rates 90% on the receiver, & 85% on the barrel with areas of light wear. The right side of the wrist band is marked with a crown over ''GR'', ''ENFIELD'', ''1918'', ''SHTLE'', ''III*'', all markings partially faded from re-finish job. The left side of the receiver band is marked with a couple small proofs. The top is marked ''FF'' in a circle, standing for ''Fanna Fail''. The right side of the band is marked with the new S/N over the crossed out old S/N ''P 1865''. The right side of the bolt head is marked ''U''. A bunch of the smaller pats are marked with small proofs. S/N mismatched bolt ''5647''. The bore is excellent. Bright & mirror like with no viable roughness. The barrel holds a square blade front sight with protective ears, & a tangent U-notch rear sight marked 2 to 20. The buttstock carries a brass trapdoor buttplate. Nothing inside trapdoor. Rifle has both sling loops with the third stacking swivel. A Beautiful example of a Irish aid SMLE. FFL or C&R Req - Value: 350 to 700
