RSAF Enfield, Model: ShtLE Mk.5 Trials Rifle, Cal: .303 British, MFG: 1924, S/N: A 3180, Bolt action rifle, the semi-pistol grip, two piece wood stock is very good as being cut down, sanded & refinished. Faint remains of cartouche on right cheek of stock. The metal finish rates 85% overall with spots of scratches, wear, & brown patina. The right side of the wrist band is marked with a crown over ''GR'', ''ENFIELD'', ''1924'', ''SHTLE'', ''V'', left side of wrist is marked ''ENGLAND''. The right side of the receiver band & barrel are marked with the S/N. the receiver band & barrel are marked with many British proof stamps. S/N matching bolt. Magazine cut-off piece has been removed. The bore is very good. Bright with a few spots of light roughness. Has five groove rifling. The barrel holds a square blade front sight. The receiver holds a flip up ladder, aperture rear sight, ladder marked 2 to 14. the stock carries a brass trapdoor buttplate, nothing inside trapdoor. Has rear sling swivel. FFL or C&R Req.
HISTORY: The ShtLE Mk V is a continuation of the British SMLE rifles, they took notes from the P14 & added a receiver mounted aperture rear sight. 20,000 were made from 1922 to 1924. it was tested by various civilian and military marksmen who thought the rear sight was too fragile/ difficult to adjust, & that the barrel was too light. These would be corrected & with other slight adjustments, the No.4 SMLE was made. Many of the rifles would be sent to British colonies & the rest were put in storage, where they were Re-issued to home guards after Dunkirk in WW2. not many of these rifles are known to survived.
