Description

Tula (Finnish) (SIG), Model: M24 Mosin, Cal: 7.62x53mmR, MFG: 1892-1920's, S/N: S3397, Bolt action rifle, 32'' barrel.

HISTORY: The M24 or M1891/24 if the first model of Finnish Mosins. They mostly stayed the same but had new production heavy ''Stepped'' barrels. The muzzle end of barrels was kept the same size as the older M91 so they could fit standard bayonets. The barrels were made by SIG & three other small German companies. Early production SIG barrels were the same profile as the M91 barrels & are rare. None of the barrels were date marked, but all were made between 1924-28. The funding for these rifles was raised by the Civil Guard Auxiliary known as the Lotta Svard and they are often known as Lotta Rifles. The re-barreling of these rifles was done in the workshops of the civil guard that later became SAKO Firearms. The Finns only refurbish older rifles with newly made or bought parts, they never made new receivers. Common on Finnish Mosins is a two pieced spliced stock. This was done to strengthen the stock, repair damaged stocks, & make better use of their wood supply on new stocks. The type of fingers in the spliced joint can determine the age of the stock.

CONDITION: The straight wrist, artic birch stock is very good with nicks, dings, chips, scuffs, & wear from use/age. Small chips by the rear rivets on the upper handguard. Stock has a toe replacement, either done when it was refurbished into a M24, or later arsenal repair. Has the period correct rounded finger splice joints. The metal is mostly worn gray with areas toned brown on the receiver & brown patina speckling. The left side of the receiver is marked with the S/N. the top of the receiver band is marked with a half faded M, a buffed/worn Imperial Russian eagle, & the lined-out number 24482. Left side of the barrel is marked with the S/N, & the SA in box, Finnish army property mark. Top of the barrel is marked with the Civil Guard crest of an S topped with three fir sprigs in a shield. The right side of the barrel is marked Schweiz-Industrie Gesellschaft, Neuhausen. The bottom of the receiver tang is marked with a very faint Tula hammer, no mfg. mark visible. Has a S/N forced matched bolt; all bolt parts marked with Izhevsk stamps. Other parts are of mix of MFGs, very common on Finnish Mosins. The bore is good. Its bright with constant light roughness throughout & lightly thinned rifling. Has been counter bored. The barrel holds a notched barleycorn front sight with a Konovalov V-notch rear sight. The arshins sight markings on the left side of the base have been crossed out, with new sight markings in meters on the right side, also a 200-meter notch was added to the base by the fins. This sight marking change Is seen on practically all Finnish Mosins. The stock carries a steel buttplate, worn gray. Stock has the Russian sling wells with Finnish sling bars. Rifle has a cleaning rod. A good example of a well-worn/used, but still perfectly functional Finn Mosin. FFL or C&R Req - Value: 500 to 1000
