German (Uruguay), Model I.G. Mod 71/94 Dovitis Mauser, Cal: 6.5x53.5mmSR Daudeteau. MFG: 1879, S/N: 69257, Bolt action single shot rifle. 31 1/2'' barrel.
HISTORY: The story of this rifle starts with Antonio Dovitiis, he was a Italian tailor and merchant of military supplies in Montevideo, who wound up with the job of procuring some new arms for the Uruguayan military. He got a bunch of single shot 11mm Mauser 1871 rifles, obsolescent by the 1890s. In 1895 he made a deal with the St. Denis arsenal in France to re-barreled 10,000 Mauser 71 rifles to the new French 6.5mm Daudeteau Cartridge, a high velocity smallbore, smokeless round. When they were made they were switched from rifles to carbines, carbines to rifles, & no rematching of parts made, making most of them having mixed parts. When Uruguay received these rifles they were not too please & wasn't really what they were looking for. They were quickly scrapped & Uruguay made some room in their budget & bought new M1895 pattern Mausers. A unique rifle with a mix of German & French markings for the Uruguay army.
CONDITION: the straight wrist wood stock is very good with various nicks, dings, & scratches from use. The blued metal finish on the barrel rates 90% with some light thinning & wear. The blued metal finish on the receiver rates 80% with spots of thinning & brown patina. The left side of the receiver is marked with the S/N, ''I.G. MOD. 71''. The right side of the receiver is marked with three thinned imperial German proofs, ''1879'', ''82''. The ''82'' mark means this rifle was sent to a arsenal & re-worked/updated in 1882. the top of the barrel is marked ''L.F.t.P'', ''St. Denis''. S/N matching bolt, Extremely rare to find on these rifles. S/N mismatched screws. The bore is excellent. Bright with strong rifling & little to no visible roughness. The barrel holds a barleycorn front sight with a stepped base/ladder V-notch rear sight. Base marked 4 to 8, ladder marked 9 to 20. the stock carries a steel buttplate, has worn black paint finish. Has bolt sling loops & cleaning rod. Rifle also comes with a RARE M1886 Lebel bayonet converted to fit on the 6.5mm M1871/94. likely done by St. Denis since they were making this style of bayonet for the French government. Antique, no FFL Req. - Value: 600 to 3000
