Description

Spandau, Model: I.G. Mod. 71/84, Quebec Papal Zouaves Ceremonial rifle, Cal: 11.15x60mmR, , MFG: 1886, S/N: 3135, Bolt action rifle, 23'' barrel.

HISTORY: This rifle was a standard Gew 71/84 before being surplused when Germany adopted the Gew 1888. it was sold to the Francis Bannerman company around 1900 as part of a large batch of surplus weapons (Bannerman was a massive international dealer in arms and military equipment). When WW1 breaks out it prompts the organization of a couple Canadian Home Guard organizations. Some bought new production rifles but the Quebec home guard did hot have as deep of pockets as them. So they turned to Bannerman to buy some cheap surplus. Bannerman sells them a batch Gew 71/84 rifles, in original config as the Germans left them. When WW1 ended, most of the rifles were put into storage before being surplus out themselves again. A small batch of them were given to the Quebec Papal Zouaves, by this time they were a ceremonial vestige of the Quebecois military volunteers who went to Italy in the 1860s to help defend the Papacy during Italian unification. They acted as parade guards for ceremonies & church events. They took the 71/84's, cut down the barrels & stocks, removed & plugged the magazines, & fit them with cut down British snider bayonets that were chromed. These rifles were only used to fire blanks at this point. All these modifications were done quiet crudely. This rifle still has the Quebec Home Guard property mark & rifle number on the right cheek, from when it was bought from Bannerman.

CONDITION: the straight wrist wood stock is good. Has two large, tight repaired cracks around the wrist. The right cheek is marked with two faded German cartouches, ''QHG'', ''207'', ''7'', ''7''. Bottom of the wrist is marked with two faded cartouches. The metal has toned to a dull gray with mixture of brown patina. The left side of the receiver is marked with the S/N, ''I.G. MOD. 71/84.''. Right side of the receiver is marked with one imperial German proof. Left side of the barrel is marked with the S/N, two small proofs, crown over ''F.W.'', ''11''. Top of the barrel is marked with a crown over ''SPANDAU.''. The right side of the barrel is marked with four proofs. Top of the buttplate has the unit marking ''19.R.'', ''6 203.''.S/N matched rear sight. S/N mismatched barrel bands, bolt, trigger guard, & buttplate. The bore is good. Bright with roughness & spots of light pitting. The barrel holds a square post to hold the bayonet, not to act as a front sight. The stock carries a steel buttplate, toning brown with roughness. Rifle has both sling loops. Comes with a Quebec home guard black leather sling, Quebec home guard black leather sheath & the aforementioned socket bayonet. A unique rifle with a long interesting past. This rifle comes from the comes from the same Mike Carrick collection as seen on the Forgotten Weapons video on the Quebec Papal Zouaves Ceremonial Gewehr 71/84.
