DWM, Model: M1896 Boer Mauser carbine, Cal: 7x57mm Mauser, MFG: 1896-97, S/N: 5007, Bolt action rifle, 18'' barrel. The Straight wrist wood stock is good. Stock has small nicks, dings, scratches, vice marks, & chips. The wood has darkened/stained in areas from added oils over the years. The upper handguard has a 3/4'' crack emanating from the rear sight. There is a 1'' crack on the top of the wrist that emanates from the tang. The right cheek of the stock is nicely hand carved ''TA.DREYER'' in a banner. Stock appears to have never been sanded & all the metal is perfect to the wood. The metal has mostly toned to a brown patina with cleaned pitting scars over areas of the receiver, barrel, & all other parts. The left side of the receiver is marked with a small proof, the S/N, and the script ''DEUTSCHE WAFFEN-UND'', ''MUNITIONSABRIKEN'', ''BERLIN''. All S/N parts are matching. The bore is good. Its bright with spots of roughness/light pitting. The barrel holds a barleycorn front sight with a flip up ladder, V-notch rear sight marked 4 to 14. the stock carries a steel buttplate, toned brown with cleaned pitting scars. Rifle has right side mounted sling swivels. Has cleaning rod. Antique, No FFL Req.
HISTORY: This rifle was carried by the Boer Commando Thomas Andries Dreyer, he was from the suburb of nooitgedacht, in the town of Rustenburg. The Boer Commando's or ''Kommandos'', were volunteer military units of guerrilla militia organized by the Boer people of South Africa. They were the main fighting force against the British during the Anglo-Boer War between 1899-1902. T.A. Dreyer was killed or died from his wounds on the January 5th, 1901, at a farm called Zwartlaagte, following a clash between Rustenburg Commando's under the command of General J.H. de la Rey, & the British force under the command of General Babington. T.A. Dreyer was reported killed in action by the red cross at Minnegotoskrall, at age 62. The location appears to be a misspelling of Monnokgotlas on the red cross's behalf. Monnokgotlas is Immediately south of Boons Hotel (which is on the farm Zwartlaagte where he was killed) & right next to the farm Cyferfontein where the clash between the Boer & British took place. This rifle likely wasn't the rifle he carried when he died, & a rifle he carried previously & discarded for a captured British Lee-Metford. After the successful battles of buffelspoort & Nooitgedacht in December of 1900, the Boers were instructed by their officers to abandon their Mauser rifles & to help themselves to captured British Lee-Metford's. The reason for them to switch rifles was the lack of ammunition at this point for the Mausers, & the abondance of captured British ammo. A Very Unique Mauser with a interesting history. Antique no FFL Req - Value: 800 to 1600
