The left side of the receiver is marked with three blocks of Japanese text that read ''EMPIRE OF GREATER JAPAN, MURATA RIFLE.'', ''TOKYO ARTILLERY ARSENAL RIFLE FACTORY'', ''MEIJI 18''. The left side of the barrel is marked with the S/N. the top rear of the barrel is marked with a small chrysanthemum, & below that is the faint remains of the kanji character ''hai'' meaning obsolete or discarded, meaning the rifle was withdrawn from military service. S/N matching bolt. The bore is good. Has spots of roughness & light pitting. The barrel holds a bead front sight. The stock carries a steel buttplate toning to a brown patina. Has both front & rear sling loops, front loop held on with wire. Antique No FFL Req.

HISTORY: Once Japan updated to the Type 22 (Murata with a tube magazine) & the type 30, they had a bunch of these obsolete single shot black powder Murata Type 13 & 18's rifle lying around. They sold many off as surplus but the military did convert some into shotguns to sell to civilians. The barrels were bored smooth, the bolt handle was slimmed & shortened, & either a new stock was made or the original was cut down & shaped. Many Murata's were converted to shotguns by gunsmiths who bought them as surplus, but this one appears to be a military conversion. Sources conflict on the actually chambering for these shotguns, but this one measure to 13.4mm at the muzzle, a .410 shell sits to far into the chamber & a 28 Ga fits halfway into the chamber before getting stuck. Antique No FFL Req. - Value: 200 to 400
