Tokyo Artillery Arsenal, Model: Type 30 Smooth Bore Trainer, Cal: 6.5x50mmR, MFG: 1899-1906, S/N: 1509, Bolt action rifle, 31'' barrel. The semi-pistol grip Japanese Walnut stock is very good. Has various nicks, dings, & scratches from use/age. The two piece spliced stock is standard on Japanese rifles. it was done to make the stocks stronger since Japanese Wood was weaker than other country's, & to make repairing them faster/cheaper. The blued metal finish retains 30% coverage with the metal mostly toning to a brown patina & spots of light rust speckling. Metal is proud to the wood around both tangs & toe of buttplate. The top of the receiver is marked with three Japanese letters ''Ku Ho Ju'', (blank firing gun). The left side of the receiver is marked with the S/N & the Tokyo Arsenal logo. Bottom of bolt handle is marked ''903''. The bore is good. Has spots of pitting. Almost no trace of rifling remaining after it was bored out. The barrel is missing its front sight but has the flip up V-notch ladder rear sight, riser is loose. Stock carries a blued steel buttplate. Has wear on edges & areas toning brown. Rifle has both sling loops, missing the cleaning rod. FFL or C&R Req.
HISTORY: They type 30 Rifle is the first of the infamous Japanese Arisaka rifle & the only true Arisaka (other models were simplifications & changes done by Kijiro Nambu, some quite major). This one was converted into a smooth bore for school training. These were only meant to fire blanks rounds & without rifling would preform poorly with normal ammo. When they were converted all the markings were wiped off the rifle. New markings were added including a Assembly number on the side(the new S/N.). About 10,000 of these rifles were converted between 1905-21. FFL or C&R Req. - Value: 350 to 700
