Tokyo Artillery Arsenal, Model: Type 38, Cal: 6.5x50mmSR, MFG: 1906-23, S/N: 907990, Bolt action rifle, 31 1/4'' barrel. The semi-pistol grip Japanese Walnut stock is good. Has various nicks, dings, gouges, & scratches from use/age. Upper handguard has a 1 3/4'' crack. Both sides of the stock around the toe has a 2 3/4'' crack. Metal is proud to the wood around the upper tang & around the toe of the buttplate. The metal finish retains almost full coverage but is starting to tone to a brown patina, with spots of thinning & rust speckling. Spots of pitting on spots around the stock line. Left side of the receiver is marked with the S/N, Tokyo Arsenal logo, & two small inspector stamps. The top of the receiver band is marked with a fully intact chrysanthemum, & ''TYPE 38'' in Japanese characters. The rear receiver bridge is marked with a small triangle in circle stamp & a small circle stamp. The left side of the barrel is marked with a small triangle in circle stamp, & ''S''. Bolt marked ''392''. The bore is good. strong rifling with roughness throughout. The barrel holds a barleycorn front sight with a flip up V-notch ladder rear sight marked 5 to 24. The stock carries a blued steel buttplate, has spots of rust & pitting. Rifle has both sling loops. Comes with cleaning rod end. FFL or C&R Req.
HISTORY: Designed by Kijiro Nambu & adopted by the Imperial Japanese army in 1905. Nambu continued his work from the type 35 Rifle for the Japanese navy, which was aimed to fixed many of the problems of the type 30. The type 38 Introduces some of the biggest changes to the Arisaka including a new Mauser derived bolt with many more safety features, a dust cover that moves with the bolt (Missing from this rifle), & new drain holes in the stock or water.
