Description

Japanese, Model: Type 38/99 Smoothbore trainer, Cal: unknown, MFG: 1900's-45, S/N: 76, Bolt action rifle, 31 3/8'' barrel. The semi-pistol grip wood stock is good with nicks, ding, scratches & wear from use/age, metal is proud to wood around the buttplate & tangs. The right cheek of the stock is marked with two Japanese letters & ''36''. The blued finish on the receiver rates 65% with spots of thinning & brown patina. The blued finish on the barrel rates 55% with spots of thinning & brown patina. The only markings on the receiver is ''2'' & the S/N ''75'' on the left side. The top of the receiver has one large gas vent hole. Bottom of bolt handle is marked ''76''. The bore is poor. Dark with roughness & pitting. The barrel holds a barleycorn front sight. The rear sight is missing with only the base & spring remaining. The stock carries a steel buttplate, toning brown with spots of roughness. Has front sling loop & rear sling base. Has no cleaning rod. School trainer rifles were made both old military rifle & new production rifles. The new production rifle were made by small company's & were never meant to be a military arm. This rifle is a mix of the type 38 & 99 rifles. It has all the appearance of a 38 with the square front barrel band of a 99, & the one gas vent hole on the receiver. In combination with the one piece stock, makes me believe this was a purpose built trainer rifle & not a surplus military rifle that was converted. With this being built as a trainer, it was meant to FIRE BLANKS ONLY, & was not proofed for normal ball cartridges. The cosigner has done a chamber cast on the bore & found out it does not match 6.5mm or 7.7mm Japanese. FFL or C&R Req. - Value: 100 to 300
