HISTORY: in 1936, Japan & Germany would sign the Anti-Comintern pact to oppose the spread of communism, Italy joined in 1937 while Spain & Hungary joined in 1939. all the nations were in a massive effort to prepare for war, & in order to help each other out, the nations would send aid packaged to each other. With the majority of arms production in Japan going to the army, the Japanese navy were in great need of arms. As result of the packs the Japanese Government contracted with the Italian Government through the Teri Royal arms factory, a order of 60,000 rifles, being this Type I rifle. Terni was contracted to make the rifles & they would make up all the drawings/designs & most of the barrels, but the actual production was subcontracted out to three different manufactures. 30,000 rifles were to be made at Gardone Val Trompia, 30,000 rifles between Beretta & Brescia. The rifles were made to type 38 specs but was made with a Carcano action. The stocks of the rifles was for some reason made in two lengths. It is notes that the Japanese did not like the longer length stocks & with examples having shorter stocks it was believed the Japanese shaved some stocks down after receiving them. Both length of stocks have been shown to have a Italian proof under the buttplate so they actually did produce different lengths. Some long stocked rifles probably did get shaved down by the Japanese though. FFL or C&R Req. - Value: 200 to 500
