Nagoya Arsenal, Model: Type 99, Cal: 7.7x58mm, MFG: 1939, S/N: 12825 No seral block, Bolt action rifle, 26'' barrel. The Japanese walnut, semi-pistol grip stock is good with nicks, dings, gouges, scratches, grain pops, small cracks, & wear from use/age. Stock has darken from added oils/age. The upper handguard has a crack running halfway down it. The stock by the front barrel band has a chunk missing. The blued metal finish rates 20%, mostly remaining in protected areas with most of the metal finish thinned, worn gray, or toning to a brown patina. The top of the receiver band is marked with a intact chrysanthemum & ''TYPE 99'' in Japanese. The left side of the receiver is marked with the S/N, the Nagoya arsenal logo, & a small inspection mark. The chrysanthemum has very light grind or scuff marks on top of it, but is still fully intact. The front barrel band, bolt handle, extractor & firing pin are all marked ''825''. The bore is very good. Its bright with no roughness, but the rifling is starting to thin. The barrel holds a barleycorn front sight with protective ears, & a flip up aperture ladder rear sight marked 3 to 15. rear sight also has flip out Anti-aircraft sight wings. The left protective ear on the front sight is bend in. the stock carried a cupped steel buttplate, worn gray & toning to a brown patina. Rifle has both side sling loops & has a cleaning rod. FFL or C&R Req.
HISTORY: The type 99 is the last of the ''Arisaka'' rifles. Simplified by Kijiro Nambu further & adopted in 1939, it was the most advance & state of the art bolt action rifle of its time. It was the first military rifle to have a chrome lined bore which really helped in the humid jungle climates & corrosive ammo destroying bores. The stock had water drain holes like the type 38. They went to a universal short rifle instead of a long rifle & carbine (very early production rifles were long rifles), & switched to a 7.7mm caliber from the 6.5mm. This was done because a few years prior they adopted a new machine gun in the new 7.7 round & wanted to standardize their ammo. The Japanese wanted to increase long range firepower & effectiveness of their machineguns since the 6.5mm ammo was lacking in that category. The Japanese looked at the British machine guns they had in .303 British, they then took inspirations from that & made the 7.7mm Japanese. A nice example of a battle worn, early production type 99 rifle. FFL or C&R Req. - Value: 200 to 400
