Description

RARE, Manufacture d'armes de Saint-Etienne (MAS), Model: MLE 1944, Cal: 7.5x54mm French, MFG: 1945-48, S/N: F5077, Semi-auto rifle, 23 1/8 barrel.

HISTORY: This rifle was originally going to be part of a big re-armament of the French army beginning in the 1930s. the plan was to have a Semi-auto rifle for main line infantry, & a cheaper bolt action for rear line & support troops. The bolt action was designed & made (MAS 36), the semi-auto was designed & 50 Guns (MAS 40) were made before Germany invaded, France would surrender & the production was halted. the rifles & tooling were put in storage until France was freed from Nazi occupation & production would start up again early 1945, now with a updated 10 Rd mag & designated MLE 1944. Only 6200 MLE 1944 were produced before being replaced by the updated MLE 1949. Germany would look at the semi-auto rifles & prototypes at the arsenal when it was taken over, but the German government wasn't convinced they need a semi-auto & did not put the French rifle into service. The storage of the rifles was left untouched by the Germans, & in 1944, when the Germans retreated, the French resistance that captured MAS ransacked the armory taking all the MAS 40 prototypes & other rifles causing problems for the French Army. The rifles that were produced largely issued to marine commandos of the French navy, where they would see use in the Indochina war.

CONDITION: The two-piece wood stock is excellent with small minor nicks, dings, & scratches. The S/N is stamped into the left cheek of buttstock & bottom of the forend. the parkerized metal finish rates 90% overall with scratches & spots of light wear. The left side of the receiver is marked ''MAS MLE 1944'', & the S/N. The end of the barrel is stamped with import marks. All parts S/N matching. The bore is excellent. Its bright & mirror like with little to no visible wear. The barrel holds a wide blade front sight with protective hood. The rear of the receiver holds an adjustable elevation, aperture rear sight marked 2 to 12. The stock carries a parkerized steel buttplate. Rifle has both side sling attachments. Comes with period correct leather sling. - Value: 1200 to 2400
