WWI Smith & Wesson, MK II Hand Ejector, CAL: 455, MFG: 1908-15, SN: 48982, Double Action Revolver, 6 1/2'' barrel. The original S&W logo medallion checkered wood grips are good. The right grip has a crack from bottom to top & there are other contusions, dings & scrapes throughout. The original metal blue finish rates 85% overall. There are a couple areas of concentrated pitting/loss on the muzzle & frame knuckle, a long with other minor handling marks throughout. Bore is excellent. U-notch rear sight & tall round blade front sight.
History: From consignors notes: ''Most certainly a serving officer, a Captain E.C.A. Miles is found in the UK National Archives online database in source documents W/0374/47738. Sadly, the records are not digitized and cannot be downloaded free of charge. The specific W/O374 (War Office) block of records at Kew indicate that Capt. Miles held a temporary commission or, alternatively, was a Territorial Officer (TA) having served during the First World War and left the army before 1923. Regiment or branch of service is not stated on the online summary page so it is impossible to trace his service from France to Macedonia. Note that E.C.A. Miles is not found in the August 1914 Army List so he was not one of the 'Old Contemptibles.' Oddly, a search of the medal cards database revealed no one by that name. It is possible to obtain the W/O374 records by ordering a copy on the UK National Archives website for a nominal fee. The British Army constituted in Salonika in October 1915 was part of the combined Allied effort to aid Serbia in the wake of the successful Bulgarian invasion of the Balkans that now threatened Greece. Commanded by General George Milne, by the spring of 1917 the British contingent numbered seven divisions plus support troops organized into two corps. British troops were not withdrawn from the ethnically torn Macedonian front until 1921.'' Continued notes: ''ERNEST CHARLES ANTHONY MILES He served with the 15th (County of London) Battalion (Prince of Wales's Own Civil Service Rifles), London Regiment. Born during 1894/5 he enlisted as 2996 Private E C Miles, 15th (County of London) Battalion (Prince of Wales's Own Civil Service Rifles), London Regiment. Ernest landed in France, with the 1/15th Battalion on 17th March, 1915. Commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant on 6th December, 1915 and promoted to Lieutenant 1st July, 1917. Lt Miles probably served with the 2/15th Battalion at Salonika. Ernest died in Ealing District, London during 1960 aged 66.'' FFL or C&R Req. - Value: 1100 to 1700
