CASED, R. Abbey (England), Muff Pistol, CAL; 45, MFG: c.1820's, SN: NVSN, Single Action Percussion Pistol, 1 1/2'' barrel.
History: A ''muff pistol'' is a small, concealable pistol, typically designed for women in the 18/19th century, that could be hidden inside a muff (a hand warmer) or pocket, allowing them to carry a weapon discreetly; the name directly refers to its intended hiding place.
MARKINGS: Left side plate: ''R.ABBEY''. Right side plate: '' WELLINGBORO' ''. The bottom of the barrel/frame have crossed scepter proofs, a horseshoe or ''C'' & ''1'' above the crossed scepter proof on the frame. Both sides & the underbelly of the brass frame are nicely engraved with decorative patterns around the trigger & flag/arms/scroll engraving on the side plates.
CONDITION: The original wood grips are excellent, having been lightly sanded & refinished. The silver finish on the barrel, hammer system & safety is very good, with some intermittent spotting/light pitting toned to a brown patina. Bore is good, rough with some pitting. Produced with no sights. Mechanical operation is excellent. The trigger unfolds from the bottom of the frame when the hammer is fully cocked. The safety only functions in the half-cocked position. Comes in a custom fit wood case, with red interior. Interior lid label has been torn off. A neat little pistol from the 1800's. Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 1000 to 1500
