Allen & Thurber, Bar Hammer Pistol -2nd Version, CAL: 36, MFG: 1837-42, SN: 30 (barrel, frame & grips), Single Shot Percussion Revolver, 3'' half octagon half round screw-on barrel. The barrel flats are marked ''ALLEN & THURBER'', ''GRAFTON MASS'', ''CAST STEEL'', & ''30'' (full SN). The full Sn can be found on the barrel, inside frame & both grips. The pistols from the Grafton period have the typical angled ''quick drop'' grip with walnut wood & an oval silver inlay. They have the Double Action system from the 1837 patent, which can be observed from the very low positioned tension screw at the bottom of the grip. Although the production of the Bar Hammer pistol was very limited in the Grafton period, it was long enough to distinguish 2 variations. First version: The grip has a wide back strap of 1/2", just like the Tube Hammer. The wooden grips are not held in position by a pin. Second version: The back strap is narrow (1/4") and has pins to hold the wooden grips in position. This narrow back strap design remained in production on all other models without changes. (bpgcollector.com). The original wood grips with inlaid silver plates are very good & solid. There are numerous light scratches & scrapes to the finish. ''66'' is stamped into the bottom of the right grip. We are unsure as to what ''66'' represents, as ''30'' (SN) is marked on the inside of both grips. The original metal blue finish rates 10%, mostly worn to metal gray & toned to a brown patina. The frame is engraved with simple floral scroll patterns. The engraving has worn thin over time. Bore is good, with consistent roughness & light pitting. No sights. These firearms would've been intended for use as a concealable self-defense pistol in the mid-19th Century & also a favorite of miners during the gold rush. Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 400 to 800
