British Ordnance New Land Pattern (Paget) Tower Pistol, CAL: 65, MFG: 1808, SN: NVSN, Single Shot Flintlock Pistol, 8 1/2'' barrel.
HISTORY: The story of the New Land Pattern pistols begins in the early 1800's. Dragoon regiments were still equipped with flintlock pistols that were introduced in the mid 1700's. The pistol that evolved was the New Land Pattern (Pagent) Light Dragoon flintlock. Similar to its predecessor, it had an additional feature that set it apart & kept it as a cavalry side-arm for many years to come. The design of the stirrup ramrod is usually attributed to General Henry Paget, who at the time, was the Colonel of the crack 7th Light Dragoons. He had a keen interest in arming his troopers with the very best weapons. In 1808, Tower produced 5,000 of these new pistols. The New Land Pattern pistol had a long period of use, lasting until changes of policy revoked troopers of their pistols in the 1840's.
MARKINGS: This pistol has many markings & they are as follows: Lock marked ''CROWN/GR'', ''I.GILL'' & ''TOWER'' at the back of the lock plate. The right side of the barrel is marked ''18'', with two proofs on the left side & one on the upper tang behind the screw. The trigger guard is marked ''M/5'', possibly for 5th Dragoons Troop M? & the butt cap is marked ''5''. There is a legible ''N.S./Y'' on the top of the wrist, likely a North Somerset or North Salopian. The left side of the stock has an ''IB'' inspector mark & the right side of the wrist has a ''CROWN/1800'' a storekeepers mark.
CONDITION: The wood stock is good, but solid. There are two small cracks coming off the left side plate, one coming off the back of the right lock plate & one that runs from side to side diagonally through the tip of the stock where the ramrod sits. There are other edge chips, small contusions, scrapes & dings to the stock. The barrel & lock plate have worn to metal gray & toned to a brown patina. The brass hardware has some dings & a thin aged patina. Bore is fair, dark & rough. No sights. An interesting & neat history on a 225 year old flintlock pistol. Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 500 to 1200
