Description

Rare Winchester, Second Model 1866 Saddle Ring Carbine, .44 Henry (.44 RF) Cal., MFG. 1868, SN: 17333, Lever Action Carbine Rifle, 20'' Round barrel, Full mag. Rare 2nd model with the transitional ''HENRY'S'' & ''KING'S'' patent marking. Since early 1866 guns were serial numbered with Henry rifles, this is actually just the 4,501st 1866 produced. It has typical 2nd model characteristics like the single upper tang screw, moderated ''Henry Drop'', contoured loading port & no visible serial number on the exterior of the rifle. The serial number is stamped on the left side of the lower tang beneath the stock, in the upper stock inlet & on the inside of the buttplate below the lower screw. A staple mounted saddle ring is located on the left side of the receiver. Full-length magazine. Has 900 yard elevator flip up rear sight & standard barrel band front sight. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the first style legend: ''HENRY'S-PATENT OCT. 16. 1860/KING'S-PATENT-MARCH 29. 1866'' in two lines ahead of the rear sight. The hammer lacks a half-cock feature & has border-less, hand-cut, knurling on the spur. The original wood stocks are very good, carrying the original finish under layer of added protective oils & possible wax. Several minor handling marks, scratches & contusions. Barrel, lever mag & hammer all display a smooth gray to brown patina, with areas of loss or fading thin from honest wear. Brass receiver & the crescent trapdoor buttplate have a nicely aged mustard patina, with minor contusions or abrasions. Bore is good, with areas of roughness, but strong rifling. This is a fantastic & rare, original & early transitional model 1866 SRC.* No FFL Req. - Value: 20000 to 30000
