FACTORY ENGRAVED Savage, Model 1899, ''AA'' GRADE, marked SAV 303, MFG. 1905, SN: 45.788, Lever Action Rifle. 26'' Tapered round barrel. The factory letter indicates this factory engraved rifle was custom ordered by a Mr. A.A. Bennett & was shipped to him on December 28,1903. Factory records indicate it was completed with Grade ''A'' engraving & Grade ''A'' checkering & was two line inscribed ''SIDNEY R. BENNETT'', ''BAINBRIDGE, NY''. Sidney Bennett, born August 6, 1887 in St. Charles Illinois, was the son of Arthur A. Bennett, who established the National Milk Sugar Company in 1885, for the manufacture of milk sugar & other milk products. The company was mover to Bainbridge, New York in 1899 & merged with the Borden Company in 1929. Upon his father's death in 1914, Sydney ran the company until its merger. Following the merger he was elected as Vice President. He was married, but did not have any children & died in 1972. He was known for his love of hunting & fishing. Sydney received this rifle from his father as a Christmas gift when he was 16 years old & it remained a constant hunting companion throughout his entire life. Sydney used the rifle for nearly 70 years & it remained in the family until being sold to the current owner who is cosigning it here. CONDITION: The letter refers to the wood as checkered fancy American walnut. The original stocks remain in excellent condition, retaining much of the original finish & clear checkering with several minor finish level scrapes or contusions. The receiver is engraved with what the factory described as artistic & carefully executed scrollwork on both sides & on top. Also, with simple line borders following the contours of the receiver. Engraving for this era was done by Mr. Enoch Tue, who was employed at the Savage plant in Utica from 1901 until 1926. The original metal blue finish on the barrel is retained at 90%, 30% on the receiver & lever toning a brown patina. Shot counter on left side of receiver. Rifle is fitted with a folding tang sight with flip up aperture, an adjustable rear sight stamped ''SAVAGE ARMS CORP'', ''UTICA N.Y. PAT'-PEN'D'', & a brass blade front sight. The bore is very good, with strong full rifling. Factory crescent metal buttplate. Rifle comes with the Savage Arms Corporation factory letter, data on engraved savage rifles, data on the Bennett family (father & son), & data about the National Milk Sugar Co. This is a fantastic Factory Master Engraved rifle with a wonderful history & ownership.* FFL or C&R Req. - Value: 2200 to 4500
