Description

RARE Civil War First Model Lindner Breech-Loading Carbine, This is one of 892 First Type carbines manufactured by Edward Lindner of Manchester, New Hampshire. 58 Percussion Cal., 20'' round barrel. Of the 892 First Type carbines manufactured, 391 where delivered to the Michigan Cavalry circa November 1861 & 501 where delivered to the 8th West Virginia Mounted Infantry in late 1863. The carbine is loaded by turning a rotating collar locking device on the barrel 180 degrees to the left. The breechblock is then pushed upward by a spring. The carbine has the correct First Type breechblock patent date marking ''EDWARD LINDER'S/PATENT/MARCH 29, 1859''. The lock plate is correctly without markings. A saddle ring is mounted on the left side of the stock. The carbine has a blade front sight & a two leaf rear sight mounted atop the receiver. It has inspector initials on left flat just behind saddle ring ''G.K.J.'', The carbine has an inspector cartouche stamped near the buttplate tang, The original wood stock is excellent & solid with several small nicks & dings. The metal finish is bright with fine polishing marks. Bore is excellent. There is some question regarding the originality of the barrel & sliding bolt cover. Both may be accurate replacements as inspected & in the opinion of a knowledgeable Civil War carbine collector. The barrel is bored slightly off center, although said to be not that uncommon amongst firearms of the period. Still, it remains a wonderful & rare example of a Edward Lindner's Civil War Carbine. Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 1000 to 5000
