Scarce Volcanic Repeating Arms Company, New haven No. 2 Volcanic Lever Action Pistol, 41 Volcanic Cal., Mfg. Antique, S/N: 7XX, Rarer 6'' Octagon Barrel version, All numbers matching on grips, frame & lever, Wood walnut grips are very good+, solid & original, with some dings, but no cracks or missing chips, some shrinkage leaves the metal proud to the grips, but they do not appear to have been sanded, extra coat of finish present. Metal has an even dark gray/brown patina, while the brass has a consistent aged look, some typical minor dings & scratches to the brass receiver, Bore is very good, dark with some pitting, This is one of an estimated 1,250 No.2 pocket pistols manufactured, The pistol has the distinctive octagon barrel with integral six-shot magazine, round finger hole in the lever & flat bottom grips. The pistol is fitted with a pinched blade front sight on the barrel & a square notch rear sight at the rear of the frame. The top barrel flat is marked ''The Volcanic Repeating Arms Co, NEW HAVEN CONN./ PATENT FEB. 14. 1854.'' The deletion of ''VOLCANIC REPEATING ARMS CO.'' from the barrel legend occurred after Oliver Winchester assumed control of the Volcanic Repeating Arms Co. & re-organized it as the New Haven Arms Company on May 1, 1857, meaning this is an example proceeding that transaction. Volcanic firearms are historically significant & represent an important step in the development of American repeating firearms & self-contained cartridges. The lever action & integral spring-loaded magazine introduced with Volcanic pistols & carbines served as the basic design for the Henry rifle & the Winchester Model 1866, 1873 & 1876 rifles. Oliver Winchester's investment in the Volcanic Repeating Arms Company eventually led to the establishment of the Winchester Repeating Arms Company. No FFL Req. - Value: 8000 to 16000
