Remington, Model 16, Marked .22 REM AUTO Cal., MFG. 1916-28, SN: 1128, Semi-Auto Rifle, 22'' Tapered round barrel, Remington's first production semi-auto .22 rifle. The original factory wood is very good with many nicks, scuffs & scratches. The stocks carry a thinning original finish with the stock having a thin added finish. Factory metal blue finish is 50%, thinning & toning to a thin brown patina. Bore is very good. Factory sights, The .22 Remington Auto fired a 45 grain bullet approximately 950 feet per second, with 90 lb ft of muzzle energy. Due to the larger diameter of the case, the cartridge is not interchangeable with the .22 Short, Long or Long Rifle. The reason for the unique cartridge was to prevent black powder .22 cartridges, which the standard .22 S, L, & LR were originally, from being fired in this gun. Black powder doesn't work well in semi-auto guns, another reason the semi-autos arrived on the scene around the time of the adoption of smokeless powder. Interesting & collectible rifle. FFL or C&R Req - Value: 300 to 800
