Winchester, Model 74, Marked .22 SHORT Cal., MFG. 1939, SN: 6626, Semi-Auto Rifle, 24'' Tapered round barrel, Although some 400,000 plus model 74 rifles were produced from 1938-59, SHORT only models were produced from 1939-52, this being a first year example. It is a rifle that is seldom encountered & little is know. Cartridges load through the buttstock once the mag follower is removed through the buttplate. The rifle has been fully refinished. The original American straight grain walnut stock is excellent as refinish, with the high gloss finish having a few finish level only scuffs. The metal has been professionally reblued, retaining 95% overall. The trigger guard has a flat blue parkerized finish. Bore is excellent. Fitted with the correct adj. rear sight & factory front sight. The factory checkered metal buttplate carries surface rust & has had an eyelet brazed to the toe, likely to serve as a sling loop. Stock has three small holes at the forend tip likely from a missing sling loop. Receiver mounted safety functions by sliding it side to side within a dovetail channel. A good looking & rare semi-auto, which bring a 50% value premium as a pre-WWII Short only example. FFL or C&R Req - Value: 200 to 600
