Description

RARE Winchester Model 1897 Trench Gun, 12ga Cal., MFG 1919, SN: 684921, 20'' barrel. cylinder marked choke. 2 3/4 inch chamber & standard markings. A military-specific refinement of the 1897 Riot Gun, the 1897 Trench Shotgun defined the American military combat shotgun through the 20th century. Seen as the answer to the problems of night fighting & trench raiding, a slide-action shotgun could fill a close-quarters space with flying lead. The Winchester & its counterparts were so harshly regarded by the enemy that the Germans threatened to summarily execute American shotgunners on capture, claiming the shotguns were ''calculated to cause unnecessary suffering'' in violation of the Hague Conventions. This shotgun has the Winchester commercial blue finish at 85% with areas of thinning at carrying points. The oil-finished smooth pistol grip walnut stock & ribbed forearm are solid & excellent, with a few nicks & dings. Carries sling swivels. The stock has a standard Winchester black checkered hard rubber buttplate with the Winchester logo in the center. A single bead sight is installed on the bayonet lug, with a 6-hole/row ventilated heat shield with patent date of 1918. The early style ''PAT. APPL. FOR'' marking is present on the bayonet lug. Shotgun carries a period bayonet with leather & metal scabbard. Overall, a nice looking example.* FFL or C&R Req. - Value: 2000 to 4000
