Birmingham small arms & Metal company, Model: Mk2 Martini-Henry India prison shotgun conversion, Cal: .577/.476 shotshell, MFG: 1877, S/N: 15699, Lever action single shot shotgun. 22 1/8'' barrel.
CONDITION: the straight wrist wood stock is fair with numerus cracks, chips, repairs, scratches & wear form use/age. Stock has darkened from oils & age. The buttstock is slightly loose & has some wobble. The left & right cheek of the stock have many faint cartouches that appear to be a mix of British & Indian. The metal is a mix of chocolate brown patina & worn gun metal gray. There are spots of rust & pitting were the buttstock & handguard meets the receiver. The right side of the receiver is marked with a crown over ''V.R'', ''BSA & MC.'', ''1877'', a crown spliced with a downward arrow, ''II'', ''2''. All these marking are very worn & barely visible. The right side of the receiver also has the S/N in the bottom right corner under a ''FE''. The left side of the receiver is stamped with British proofs. The left side of the barrel is marked with more British proofs, ''F.397''. The top side is marked with a ''F'' & another proof. The right side is marked ''FE'' over the S/N. both barrel bands have British proof on the left side, the bottom of the lever & trigger guard also have proof marks. There is a very faint triangle of checkering on the top rear of the receiver. The bore is very good. Its bright with some spots of roughness. The barrel holds a short barleycorn front sight with a fixed small V-notch rear sight. The stock carries a steel buttplate that has rust & pitting. Rifle has both sling loops & comes with a cleaning rod. Antique No FFL Req.
HISTORY: These guns were made from old surplus Martini-Henrys by boring out the rifling & installing a new rear sight. They were used by Indian Prison guards & police sometime in the 1890s-1930s. Antique No FFL Req. - Value: 200 to 400
