Description

MAS Mle Modele Improved Pattern 1949/56, 7.62/308 cal., MFG: 1956, SN: H03814, Semi-Auto Rifle, Features blue barrel & receiver, 39 1/4'' overall length, 20 1/2'' barrel. S.I.A. Imported. Original stained wood stock with matching handguard. Finger grooved forearm. Scope mount & grenade launcher sight. Sling ring & bar on the left side of the stock, with original sling, V-blade & post front sight & adjustable rear sight graduated to 1200 meters. 10 round detachable box magazine, Steel buttplate. Metal finish is 80% with some scattered cleaned pit scaring. Very good bore. From the internet: ''At the end of WWII, liberated France found itself in the need of rearming its infantry with semi-automatic rifles. Starting with Rossignol's gas system & some prototypes built during the 1920s & 1930s, Manufacturer Nationale d'Armes de St-Etienne (MAS) developed a semi-automatic rifle which was produced in very limited numbers in 1944 as MAS-44. It was later improved to accept new, detachable magazines & modified to be able to launch rifle grenades, & then became the MAS-49, or ''Fusil Automatique MAS Modele 1949''. MAS-1949 (as it was stamped on the receiver), saw heavy combat use in French Indo-China & Algeria & proved itself accurate& reliable. In 1956, an improved pattern rifle was adopted by Armee de Terre (French Army) as a MAS-1949/56. The MAS-49/56 was lighter, had a shorter barrel & forend, different grenade launcher sights & was able to be fitted with a spike-shaped bayonet. MAS-49/56 served as a first-line weapon with the French army until 1979, when it was replaced by the 5.56mm FAMAS rifle.'' Overall, this is a very nice original example. FFL or C&R Req. - Value: 500 to 1500
