Engraved Merwin, Hulbert & Co. OPEN TOP Large Frame 2nd Model, Single Action Revolver, 44-40 WCF Cal., MFG 1878-1882, SN 13613, High quality revolvers manufactured by Hopkins & Allen for Merwin, Hulbert & Co. were popular with the police departments in the major cities in the eastern U.S.. They were also carried by many in the West, because of the universal use of the 44-40 cal between this Rev. & the Winchester 1873, including lawman Pat Garret. But the company was besieged by financial problems throughout its history & closed before the end of the 19th century. Their revolvers utilize a unique mechanism that allows the barrel to be rotated to the side & pulled forward along with the cylinder, causing the empty cartridge cases to fall out. This pistol has the desirable long barrel, the open top frame, & cylinder with ''scoop'' fluting. Fitted with Rare Special Order Pearl grips. It is marked with the one line Merwin, Hulbert & Co. address & patent information on the top of the barrel, & the Hopkins & Allen address in one line on the left of the barrel. Stamped ''CALIBRE/WINCHESTER 1873'' on the left side of the frame & ''3021'' on the left side of the grip frame by the lanyard hole. ''386'' is stamped on inside of cylinder. The front sight is a half moon round blade integral to the barrel & a notch in the top of the frame behind the cylinder serves as a rear sight. The detail engraving has images of the Mexican eagle & snake on left side & a country cottage on hill side looking over lake & mountains on the right. Pearl grips are very good with small chip to right side back bottom edge. Metal shows traces of gold plating in protected areas. Bore is good with some rifling & roughness, Lanyard ring mounted on butt. The cylider spins freely & does not always index properly. Hammer can become stuck in place, needs some adjustment. Overall, this is a very nice large frame Merwin, with some very fancy special-order features. No FFL Req. - Value: 2000 to 5000
